    Our mission:

     

     

    To ensure that students are effective users of ideas and information. (Information Power, 6, 1998)

     

     

     

     

    Our purpose:

     

     

               To acquire books and other materials   
               related to the demands of our curricula and school needs while organizing these materials
               for effective use by providing students with print and electronic resource materials,
               reference materials, leisure materials, Accelerated Reader materials, technnology, Internet,
              Access PA, POWER Library, and a quiet atmosphere to study and work.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  

     

     

     

     

    Our objective:

     

     

    To develop students' skills and resourcefulnes in library research and to promote literary awareness.

     

    Library Usage:

             Students come to the library:

    1.      when their whole class is scheduled to come for a           project

    2.      individually from a class or study hall

    3.      before or after school

    Students who enter the library must have their must have their passes signed with the appropriate signature from their study hall or classroom teacher.  Students will not be admitted without a signed handbook.

    EVERY STUDENT MUST SIGN IN ON THE LIBRARY SIGN-IN SHEET UPON ARRIVAL IN THE LIBRARY AND SIGN OUT WHEN RETURNING TO CLASS.

    Passes will be kept at the circulation desk until students are ready to leave.  Mrs. Wagner will sign the students’ passes, and students must sign out of the library.  Failure to have Mrs. Wagner sign passes and/or failure to arrive at the library or return to study hall or classroom in a timely fashion could result in forfeit of library privileges.

     

    “Great Expectations” for Library Behavior:

    The library setting has been changed to a more sophisticated format for the convenience and comfort for the convenience and comfort of library users.  Appropriate and mature behavior is required so that others in the library may read, study, and work.   Expectations include:

    1.      having an appropriate purpose

    2.      being quiet so others may work and read

    3.      using and sharing library materials appropriately

    4.      using computers and computer materials appropriately

    5.      respecting the rights of others

    6.      respecting library materials and furnishings

    7.      cooperation during special library programs and activities

    FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH LIBRARY EXPECTATIONS WILL RESULT IN FORFEIT OF LIBRARY PRIVILEGES.

     

    Circulation of Materials:

          Students must have their library cards with them in order to borrow materials!

    Students who do not have their library cards with may place their materials on reserve to be picked up at a later time. 

    Students may not use someone else’s library card.  Attempts to do so will result in forfeit of check-out privileges for BOTH parties.

    In signing out library materials, students are agreeing to be responsible for those materials.  Materials that are lost or damaged will be paid for by the student.

    The circulation period for regular library is TWO WEEKS, with unlimited renewals unless someone else had reserved that item. 

    Materials that are returned late are subject to library fines.

    Middle School Students may NOT check out high school books (if this were only a middle school library, we would not have high school books in here).

    All materials are to be returned to the circulation desk at the front of the library.  Overdue materials for regular books are $.10 for each school day that the book is overdue.  Overnight reference materials must be returned by the end of homeroom.  A fine of $.10 will be charged for every period that the material is late.

     

    Computer Use:

    1.      Students are required to follow the rules and regulations outlined in the Newport School District Acceptable Use Agreement.

    2.      All use of library computers must be in support of education and research and consistent with the purposes of the Newport School District.

    3.      The following activities are prohibited:  

    a.      use of chat rooms

    b.      use of email and Instant Messenger, game playing, unless part of an assignment given by a teacher

    c.       loading or use of unauthorized games, programs, files, or other electronic media

    d.      making any changes to computer settings
     
    e. use of YouTube
     
    f. use of Facebook or any other social networking sites.

    4.  Before printing, please do a “print preview” to ensure that the information you plan to print is available for printing.  If students are printing non-academic information or not following print procedures, printing privileges will be forfeited.

    USE OF LIBRARY COMPUTERS IS A PRIVILEGE; FAILURE TO COMPY WITH THE ABOVE WILL RESULT IN YOUR FORFEIT OF YOUR COMPUTER PRIVILEGES.    

     

    NHS Library Schedule:

    The library is open at 7:45am and closes at 3:00pm.  Occasionally, library hours may be extending during periods of special project research.  These extensions are announced in advance so that students who need to work in the library may plan to do so.

    Occasionally, the library may be in use by a class and may be closed to study hall students.  When this happens, a limited number of students may still return, renew, pay fines, or check out materials, etc. at the very beginning or the end of those scheduled periods.  Teachers will be notified of the library schedule prior to the start of each week.
