NewportSAP TeamThe Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a systematic process used to identify high-risk students having difficulty in school because of problems related to substance abuse and/or mental health. Our school's main priority is to educate students, and if a student is under the influence of mind-altering chemicals or feels depressed and hopeless, he or she cannot learn effectively. The SAP team members have undergone extensive training provided by the Holy Spirit Hospital and are dedicated to helping students have maximum learning experiences.SAP operates through referrals from self-referrals, parents, other students, and school personnel. Once a referral is given to the guidance office or any member of the SAP team, the team gathers information on the student through contacting the student's teachers and parents. An interview with the student and his/her parents or guardians is the next step. Based on all gathered information, the SAP Team may meet with the student and family to present recommendations. Students referred to the program may receive a professional assessment with the appropriate drug and alcohol or mental health community agencies that serve the Newport School District.Confidentiality between the student and school personnel will be respected and maintained in the best interest of the student.There are separate support staff members for both the Middle School and the High School.
